Grease Live Review

Grease live was, in my opinion, the best live television play in history. We have seen other classics like “The Sound of Music”, come to the small screen but compared to Grease all have fallen short. The casting and costumes were perfect, sets were very realistic, transitions were seamless and the singing and dancing was even better than the original.

One of the coolest aspects of the play was how well they honored the original movie while still bringing in a couple of modern twists. There was something in this show for every generation. For the generation that grew up with the movie there was the shock factor when the original Frenchie played the waitress in the diner. The iconic voice was easily recognized and was a great unexpected touch. For the millennial generation the fact that Boyz to Men sang “Beauty School Dropout” gave people a taste of their childhood and put a new spin on the old classic. For the youngest generation, Grease Live drew a lot of interest by casting stars who shaped our childhood like Vanessa Hudgens, Joe Jonas, Keke Palmer and more.

Although I thought the show was as close to perfect as it can be, there were a few moments that did not go over very well. First off, strayed from the original plot adding a new solo song from in the diner before Beauty School dropout. Although it was an original composure specifically for the play and Carly Rae Jepsen’s voice sounded great, I did not approve. The song was very anticlimactic and honestly unnecessary. I think the song may have been added because the actors needed a little extra time for a costume change but I feel that there could have been something different done. It is also necessary to address some of the major technical difficulties. With any live performance, there are bound to be a few mishaps. In this case during one of the signature numbers “Hopelessly Devoted”, sound cut out on the east coast and when they attempted to fix it the entire show was set back 3 numbers and we ended up missing the hand jive and the rest of Julianne Hough’s solo.

Finally I have to give a big kudos to the casting director who I feel like brought together the perfect cast for this show. The casting of Julianne Hough as Sandy could not have been more perfect. Not only is she an amazing dancer and singer, but the innocence of her look was a rival to even Olivia John Newton. Vanessa Hudgens captured the sass of Russo perfectly, but what was even more amazing about her performance was that she was able to do such a flawless job after finding out that her dad died just hours before the show. Any unknowing viewer would never be able to see that in her performance. I also found the casting of Keke Palmer for the role of Marty to be a pleasant change. When the original Grease was being filmed there was obviously a lack of diversity in the movie so it was refreshing to see them include her.I thought she did a perfect job at the role  by capturing the idea of being a little promiscuous in the song “Freddy My Love” while not going too far, staying the cute, lovable character Marty is.
In all I thought it was a very high energy performance that will go down in the books as one of the best live musical performances in history. The actors had extremely big shoes to fill, but I thought they did an amazing job.
